AUSTIN, Texas. Authorities continue investigating the officer-involved sh00t1ng that claimed the l1f3 of Anthoneil Williams II, a 17-year-old teenager, after Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a 911 call reporting an allegedly 4rm3d person near a neighborhood park.

Investigators later confirmed that the object in the teenager’s waistband was a water bottle, not a f1r34rm.

According to APD Chief Lisa Davis, officers responded during the early morning hours of July 24 to the 10100 block of Baden Lane after receiving a report that a young person appeared to be carrying a handgun.

Body-camera footage released by the department shows officers repeatedly ordering the teenager to keep his hands visible. Moments later, the officers opened fire after believing he was reaching for a weapon.

Following the incident, investigators determined that Anthoneil Williams II was unarmed and that the item tucked into his waistband was a water bottle.

Authorities also stated that evidence indicates the 911 call originated from the teenager’s own phone, leading investigators to examine the possibility that the incident may have involved what police described as a potential su1c1d2 by police.

Officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that no final conclusion has been reached.

The three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure while both criminal and internal administrative investigations are conducted.

Chief Lisa Davis expressed condolences to the teenager’s family and said investigators are reviewing body-camera footage, witness statements, forensic evidence, and all available information before determining whether departmental policies were followed.

The case has drawn significant public attention across Austin, with community leaders and advocacy organizations calling for a thorough review of the shooting and broader discussions about responses to mental health crises.

At the same time, police officials have asked the public to allow the investigative process to continue before any final determinations are made regarding the actions of the officers involved.
