DOLLY PARTON WAS FILMING ON A FARM WHEN 9/11 HAPPENED — THE SONG SHE WROTE THE NEXT DAY CAME FROM A PLACE OF PRAYER 💔🇺🇸

Dolly Parton was on a rented farm outside Pigeon Forge on September 11, 2001, shooting a Dollywood promo when word of the attacks reached the set. Cell phones barely worked out there. A woman ran from the farmhouse shouting about the Twin Towers. Most of the crew was from New York. Work stopped.
The next day she wrote “Hello God.” She later said the song arrived almost ready-made — a prayer more than a protest — after she realized how quickly an ordinary morning could collapse. It went on her 2002 album Halos & Horns. In November that year she sang it at the CMA Awards with the Christ Church Choir of Nashville.
She did not appear on the September 21 telethon America: A Tribute to Heroes. Her public answer came later. On New Year’s Eve 2001 she hosted Red, White & Bluegrᴀss at the Grand Ole Opry House, a benefit for the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, set up for children and spouses of those killed on September 11. She said she wanted to show her colors — red, white, and blue — and help as a neighbor, not only as a star. Years afterward she told the same story in Songteller: My Life in Lyrics: where she was, how the set fell apart, and why the song felt given rather than written.
The telethon that week raised more than $200 million for the United Way’s September 11 fund. Dolly’s concert was smaller and aimed at scholarships. Both were attempts, in different rooms, to do something useful after the country had been knocked silent.
