💔 Fourth Firefighter Dies After Battling Devastating Knowles Fire Near the Utah-Colorado Border

MESA COUNTY, Colorado — The U.S. wildland firefighting community is mourning another heartbreaking l0ss after authorities confirmed that Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, p4ss3d 4w4y from severe burn injuries sustained while battling the Knowles Fire in western Colorado near the Colorado–Utah border.

His p4ss1ng brings the total number of firefighters who l0st their l1v3s as a result of the incident to four.

According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Matthews was ᴀssigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and was one of five firefighters caught in a burn0v3r on June 27 while conducting initial 4tt4ck operations on the rapidly spreading wildfire.

Three fellow firefighters—Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan; Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, Arizona; and Sydney Watson, 27, of Warrior, Alabama—l0st their l1v3s at the scene despite deploying emergency fire shelters. Matthews remained hospitalized for several weeks before succumbing to his injuries on July 24.
