Missing South Carolina girl’s remains may never be fully recovered: ‘Simply not possible’

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) – The community has been following the Javeayah Harris case since the news broke that ‘she went missing’ on Tuesday, June 30th, 2026.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office began searching for the 4-year-old near Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road. The agency announced she was wearing pink Minnie Mouse pajamas, Crocs, had braided hair with pink beads and asked the community to keep an eye out for the little girl.

As of of 11 a.m. July 1st, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, as well as several other law enforcement agencies expanded the search for Javeayah.

On July 2nd, the ACSO addressed concerns from the community. Many asked why an Amber Alert wasn’t issued and if law enforcement needed help locating her. In a statement the agency said, “We simply cannot risk someone not properly trained making a mistake, missing a clue, or causing other harm.” Also that the situation did not meet the requirement for an Amber Alert to be issued. At that time 3000 acres had been searched. Later that day, the 1st press conference was held and the Sheriff’s Office alerted the community of different ways they could report information and encouraged everyone to share Javeayah’s picture.

It had been more than 48 hours since the ‘missing’ child had been seen on July 3rd and law enforcement said there was no evidence she was taken and that she may have wandered away on her own. Hundreds of law enforcement and first responders continued to search around Reynolds Pond Road where she was last seen. At that time 5000 acres had been covered. The searched was ‘scaled back’ Friday night.

On July 4th, Sheriff Marty Sawyer held another press conference with news nobody wanted to hear.

I am deeply saddened to tell you our investigation and evidence leads us to believe 4-year-old Javeayah Harris is deceased. It is the outcome that we all feared and sadly, it is now what we face and we will face it together as a community.

According to Sheriff Sawyer, Javeayah Harris’ parents, Johmarea Harris, 23, and Michilae Herring, 22, were arrested and charged with Homicide by Child Abuse with Herring having an additional charge of Filing a False Police Report. Sheriff Sawyer stated that the 4-year-old was believed to have been ᴅᴇᴀᴅ for about a month.

The following day, Sunday, July 5th, bond was denied for the parents. Both Herring and Harris appeared at the hearings without an attorney. The community mourned the death of the little girl, even though most people didn’t even know her. A vigil was held in the The Alley Sunday night to show love, support and to honor Javeayah.
