Clancy spoke about his grief over his children’s death in an interview with ‘60 Minutes’
Patrick Clancy has dealt with immense grief following the 2023 deaths of his three children. But he said one treatment has helped with some of the worst of his anguish.
Clancy revealed eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has worked “like a miracle” for him in an interview with 60 Minutes.
In an extended cut of the interview, Clancy told CBS correspondent Ross Douthat that EMDR, a type of therapy often used to treat PTSD, made him face the trauma of losing his children “head on.”
“It’s unpleasant but they get you used to dealing with that,” Clancy said. “And, eventually, you’re better at processing it … After I did it — all of those sessions — the waking up screaming, the horrible dreams, they mostly stopped. I mean, it was like a miracle.”
Clancy was joined later in the interview by his wife, Dr. Rachel Danis, an infertility specialist, with whom he lives in New York City. The couple confirmed they are starting a family together.
When asked about conspiracy theories surrounding the deaths of his children, Clancy sharply criticized them.
“It’s deeply harmful to the legacy of my children,” he said of the conspiracy theories. “It is a huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health. And it’s done real harm to real people, myself included but also others.”
The interview was the first time Clancy has spoken out since the trial of his ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy, ended.
Lindsay is charged with murder in the deaths of her three children with Patrick — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan. They were strangled to death in their Duxbury, Mᴀss., home in January 2023.
Patrick, who had been sent on an errand by Lindsay, returned home to find Lindsay seriously wounded from a suicide attempt and his children with exercise bands around their necks.
Lindsay does not deny killing the children but has pleaded not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility. The defense has argued she was in a state of postpartum psychosis and suffering from overmedication.
The prosecution has claimed Lindsay was not suffering from psychosis and that she deliberately killed the children.
Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after the jury remained ᴅᴇᴀᴅlocked despite a week of deliberations.
A follow-up court hearing in the case is set for Sept. 29.
