Sourced from quarries several kilometers away—likely from the Lucre area—transporting these multi-ton megaliths represents a monumental organizational and logistical feat, accomplished without the use of the wheel or draft animals. Once transported to the site, the individual stones were rough-hewn using even harder river cobbles of diorite or basalt as hammerstones. The most defining characteristic of this masonry style is the irregular, polygonal shape of the blocks, which fit together with astounding, microscopic precision. Each stone was individually tailored, with masons likely creating a template to transfer the contours of surrounding blocks onto the one being worked, resulting in a seamless, mortarless fit.

Structurally, it represents an advanced adaptation to the highly seismic Andean environment. The very effort required to quarry, transport, and intricately shape these megaliths served as a powerful demonstration of the Inca state’s absolute control over labor and resources, known as the mit’a system. However, more recent, systematic excavations and conservation projects—such as those led by the Peruvian Insтιтuto Nacional de Cultura (now the Ministry of Culture)—have employed stratigraphic analysis and radiocarbon dating to refine the site’s chronology.
