Family, friends, teammates, and members of the Ocean Springs community gathered on Monday, July 20, at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to celebrate the life of Nolan Xavier Wells, the 18-year-old student-athlete whose death has prompted an ongoing investigation.
Hundreds attended the visitation and memorial service, paying tribute to a young man remembered for his kindness, leadership, and love for his family and friends.
Nolan Xavier Wells, a graduate of Ocean Springs High School and football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared after a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island.
His body was recovered two days later, and while investigators have indicated there is currently no confirmed evidence of criminal activity, the official cause of death has not yet been released as authorities continue reviewing the case.
During the emotional service, Nolan’s parents, Christine Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, thanked the community for its overwhelming support while reflecting on the joy their son brought to everyone who knew him.
Family attorney Ben Crump stood beside them, calling for a complete and transparent investigation.
Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered the eulogy, urged anyone with credible information to come forward and emphasized the family’s continued search for answers.
The funeral drew support from across the country, including filmmaker Tyler Perry, who covered the funeral expenses, filmmaker Spike Lee, retired NFL star Terrell Owens, and many local and national leaders.
Following the church service, invited family members, friends, and teammates gathered for a celebration of Nolan’s life at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, where they shared memories and honored his legacy.
As the investigation continues, Nolan Xavier Wells is being remembered as a gifted athlete, devoted son, loyal friend, and young man whose life touched countless people.
His family has pledged to continue seeking answers while thanking the community for the compᴀssion, prayers, and unwavering support shown throughout this difficult time.
