For centuries after the fall of Rome, the Hypogeum was filled with dirt, debris, and vegetation, hiding the complex infrastructure beneath the arena floor. The systematic scientific excavation of this area began in the 19th century, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that major progress was made. A pivotal figure in the uncovering of the Colosseum’s depths was Giuseppe Cozzo, an engineer and archaeologist whose 1920s excavations focused on the structural mechanics of the building. More recently, in the 2010s, a mᴀssive restoration and archaeological project funded by the Italian government and private contributors allowed for the first full mapping of the Hypogeum. These efforts have cleared centuries of silt, revealing the water drainage systems and the precise sockets used for ancient machinery, providing a clear view of the stadium’s “engine room.”

The preservation of these tunnels allows modern scholars to study ancient hydraulic engineering, as the Hypogeum featured a complex drainage system connected to the city’s sewers to prevent flooding. Today, managed by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, the site remains one of the most important archaeological laboratories in the world.
