Is that a regret?

>> No, I never regretted it.

I mean, that was a choice.

So, you make your choices, you make your sacrifices, and I never looked back.

>> There was no Dolly.

There would there would be no us.

>> Dolly Parton is one of the most honored female country performers of all time.

>> And it’s wonderful and it’s very touching.

>> Dolly Parton doesn’t just simply sing country music on stage.

She’s transformed the stage in the most modern style of a music star.

Every time she steps on stage, Dolly Parton doesn’t merely perform.

She commands the entire room without ever having to raise her voice.

Dolly has lived in the light.

>> Dolly Parton calls herself a cartoon character that I created.

And neither Bugs Bunny nor Minnie Mouse ever had it so good.

But there’s the other Dolly Parton, the savviest woman in show business, the singer, the songwriter, and yet another, the hillbilly kid from the Great Smokies of Tennessee who grew up dirt poor in a family of 14, who despite her millions remains deeply attached to the customs, the humor, and for sure the music of her roots.

[singing] >> There’s [music] nothing dirty going on.

>> Dolly meant a lot to me.

She was a friend and uh I mean a friend from the very instant we said hello which [music] were so wonderful and when we I got the call from her come on down to Nashville I want [music] you to sing this song with me.

>> Mhm.

>> I said well what song you talking about?

The one I just wrote [music] called Peace Like a River.

And may I be a great [music] reflection.

>> She settled on the party girl persona when she was still a kid.

>> The woman that I was most impressed with when I was a little girl was the town  but I didn’t know what that meant.

This woman had the yellow peroxide hair.

She had the red nails, the red lipstick, the beautiful eyes, the high heels, short skirt, and I thought she was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen.

And whoever I was with say, “Oh, she ain’t nothing but trash.”

And I make the joke and I would say, “Well, that’s what I’m going to be when I grow up.”

[laughter] Meaning, that’s how I want to look.

It was a lot of that being lonely, being homesick, crying every night.

>> Her voice carries a warmth, sincerity, and gentle strength that very few artists have ever possessed.

Even decades later, her songs remain the standard by which people measure true authenticity against everyone else.

I’m [music] begging of you.

Please don’t take my man.

>> We need Dolly Parton.

And she and I both believed that theory.

So, we did some mᴀssive flirting in front of the nation.

>> If you touch that bone, I’m going to jerk you clean out of the wall.

>> Her character, Dora Lee, got the best of an abusive male boss and in the eyes of some became a feminist hero.

>> Lee, let me loose.

I’m calling for help.

>> No, I don’t want you to call for help.

>> What do you remember about that day shooting with her?

>> It was one of those very easy days.

>> Sit on your pile of money and awards.

>> Do that.

I don’t care.

I always count my blessings more than I count my money.

I don’t work for money.

Never did.

I just wanted it was the arts.

It was the job.

I love the work.

>> We’re all just We’re all just trying to be Dolly.

Let’s be honest.

He may know where I am sleeping and perhaps he’ll weep for me.

So I better hush before you cry after death and we can’t finish the show.

[laughter] >> Like a lot of Americans, I’m under a lot of [laughter] stress right now.

Dolly, >> what makes Dolly truly unforgettable isn’t just her genius songwriting or that distinctive voice.

It’s the way she connects with thousands of people at once, making every audience member feel like she’s singing just for them.

>> Love that little squeak.

I’m old enough now to kiss and hug and I like it [music] down.

We’re laughing and drinking and having a party.

Somebody said to me, “Well, you know what?

You just got such a big mouth and you just know how to talk to people.

Did you ever think about running for president?

I said, I think we’ve had enough boobs in the White House.

>> Well, as only Dolly can do, she marched in the room.

And once she came in, the song was never the same.

I mean, it was really that different when she sang with me than when I sang it by myself.

It had a different meaning, a different set of values to it.

And musically, it was so much better.

>> [music] >> Now, you you raised this subject by saying, “Listen, we have a special relationship, Dolly Partner and I, but it’s not what you think, >> right?

>> You and I have been around a long time, Penny.

Neither one of us just tumbled
Off the turnup truck.”

>> I did.

I just [laughter] >> That level of genuine presence isn’t something that can be taught.

It’s something only a rare few artists in the world possess.

Musicians, singers, and performers across generations continue to admire Dolly Parton.

And she’s she’s a master.

She’s a master.

And >> there’s like featuring on a record and then there’s what Dolly Parton does on a record and it’s like not they’re not the same.

>> It’s not the same, dude.

She’s so good and [laughter] she’s still H๏τ.

It’s crazy.

She’s she’s so beautiful and so talented.

>> Dolly Parton’s legacy.

Obviously music is part of her legacy, but I think I think her true legacy is how she has made the world better.

She she has the imagination library, you know, she she cares about children and she cares about um their imaginations, what she talks about.

She crafted heartbreaking and soul stirring stories about the lives of people often overlooked.

She painted a picture with her words and then colored in the lines with that angelic voice.

Got to be the first to touch the sky.

And don’t let somebody tell you you can’t do it.

And if they say that, prove to them it’s a lie.

You know, cuz it’s like if you fail at first, just keep on trying cuz you’re not a failure in God’s eyes.

So just like just stand back and let the magic happen cuz you’re never going to know if you don’t try.

ANYBODY WANT TO GO TO A PARTY WITH ME?

THEY TELL ME THEY’RE GOING TO GO DOWN AND THEY say we’re all invited, [music] but I don’t have a date.

Is there a hairy lady boy that I can go with?

How about YOU [music] and drinking and having a party [music] down there just to cry my heart out feeling [music] sorry a party just to go down.

So, I think I’ll cry these useless tears and [music] get myself together.

And I think I’ll moy down the hall and have a [music] look around cuz I can’t stay inside this lousy room and cry forever.

I think I’d really ra [music] >> She’s proven that technique alone isn’t enough.

Heart, humor, and absolute sincerity are what make an artist immortal.

And Dolly has all three in spades.

>> And I was amazed that my little song could could be that.

The fact that so many people relate to that song is amazing to me in the ways that they do.

I have people tell me they sang it at their dad’s funeral.

And I hear mom saying, “Oh, I cried.

I played that when my son went off to college.”

>> You were not naturally pretty.

No.

I’ve seen the pictures, Dolly.

I’m sorry.

I disagree.

>> You should have seen me this morning before I got ready to see you.

But I’m serious though.

I’m not like a natural beauty.

Uh but I can enhance it.

Whatever.

Whatever it takes.

I do.

I try to make the most of [music] everything.

>> Her life’s work to me is a narrative, a painful, beautiful, poetic, melodic commentary on what it’s like to be human and on what it’s like to be a woman in America.

So anyway, there’s more to it, but anyway, it was about her thinking he, you know, today was our wedding day, but where oh where can he be?

He’s gone to seek him another bride.

He cares no more.

>> But Dolly Parton, you bonded with her while making that film.

>> She is an amazing woman.

She is an She is so smart and she’s kind of psychic.

She’s really profound.

I I I am in awe of Dolly.

I love her very much.

>> And she gave you advice because you had seen your father’s reaction to fame.

The way she dares to live fully as herself has inspired countless artists to stop apologizing for who they are and to pour everything they’ve got into it, both on stage and off.

>> Dolly Parton wrote the number one most selling song of all time by a female artist.

I will always love you.

One of the most beautiful songs ever.

And you can hear in her voice there’s no strain.

She hits every note.

It’s she owns it.

She possesses it.

And that’s the way she I think she sort of greeted and embraced the world with a generosity that makes you smile, you know.

And she played up her looks and her body and all of that, you know, the dumb blonde things.

And she finally just said, you know, I’m not dumb and I’m not a blonde.

You know, it’s like [laughter] that to me is is Dolly got it.

>> Reeba, uh, what was your last text exchange with Dolly?

Or do you and Dolly text?

>> Dolly does not text.

>> She does not.

Does she email?

>> No.

>> Really?

>> No.

>> So, you only can get a hold of her on the landline?

>> Facts.

>> Wow.

Facts.

>> Really?

>> Facts?

Really?

YOU CAN ONLY FAX HER?

>> I don’t have her telephone number.

[music] And I asked Kenny Rogers one time.

I said, “Do you have Dolly’s number?”

HE SAID, “NO.

” >> WOW.

MY MIND.

>> I feel like now we we try so hard to like have that, you know, radio success and it’s like we we know we have the formula, you know, and I feel like she never had a formula.

She just sings her heart and people hear that and they get that and that’s what it really should be all about.

Um, as far as her influencing my career, we’re all just we’re all just trying to be Dolly, let’s be honest.

Um, you know, she is somebody that has set such an incredible example for all of us and paved such a path for us that there are so many of us that it’s like, okay, if there was no Dolly, there [bell] would there would be no us.

>> Dolly is fantastic.

So, she’s got to be right.

Whatever Dolly says is right.

>> Well, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be singing, you know, with Dolly on anything really.

But this particular song, Pretty Paper, she nailed it and I know it’s going to be a great album.

[music] I’m really glad to be a part of it.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to write songs.

Uh, [music] and you know, some people play the fiddle.

I I write songs and uh I wish I could play the fiddle.

One of my uh ex father-in-laws, they asked him one time uh some advice.

[music] He said, “Take my advice and do what you want to.”

And I found that to be pretty good.

You know, I I love her.

Anything she sings, we did some songs together.

I did an album called To All the Girls.

And uh Dolly and I sing one uh together in in in that CD and you know I’m glad to sing with her anytime anywhere.

Even today as the news breaks that she has pᴀssed away at the age of 80.

Her music continues to draw in millions of new listeners introducing generation after generation to that rare combination of brilliant talent and genuine kindness that made her one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

Now, let’s listen to other music legends pay tribute and remember Dolly Parton.

>> A short while later, I get a note from Dolly on an email saying, “I’m doing this Rockstar album you might have heard about it.

Do you do you uh would you like to to consider [music] doing a song?”

Yeah.

You know, can I send you the file?

Yeah.

So, she sent [music] me the file.

Soon as I heard the demo, I was I was all in.

I was all in.

She knew what she was doing to offer that piece of music cuz it’s [music] not just Rob.

It’s Rob from Priest.

This is a priest song.

This is priest with Dolly Parton.

Uh so the bygones track was just was just really uh a really great uh really great chance to [music] do something that I think now it’s like was it real?

I went into a studio that I use in Phoenix.

She was in Nashville with with [music] Ken, her producer.

We were going back and forth.

She’s screaming on the phone.

Oh my god, I can’t believe that.

Can you do [music] Can you try this?

That.

So we we we put it together in real time in in that way and then eventually [music] it uh made its way into the Rockstar album.

I didn’t even know if it was going to [music] be there cuz I you know me, I’m I think I’m Everything I do is not to the standard that I [music] want it to be.

I’m always complaining, you know, I’m always beating myself up because I always think I can do better.

[music] So when the song went to her, I thought, well, let’s see what happens.

It [music] did really, really well.

He got to some number one spots in certain radio stations in the state.

>> Had a formula.

She just sings her heart and people hear that and they get that.

>> President Trump writing on True Social saying in part, “She was one of the greatest country singers and far beyond ever.”

A true loss for millions of people.

There has never been anyone like her and never will.

Another country music singer legend, Reeba McIntyre, posting on social media reading in part, “Dolly, thank you for all the wonderful things you did for us here on Earth.

Your love, your music, and you gave so much with your huge heart.

Billy Ray Cyrus sharing his thoughts and memories of the music legend.

The two of them, of course, were very close.

His daughter, Miley Cyrus, is her godchild.

He wrote, “Dolly recently sent him a message telling him that she loved him and he will always love her the same.

” As again, many know, Miley Cyrus was Dolly’s godaughter.

Singer and actress Dion Warwick, who was a close friend of pardon, posting this image, writing, “I will certainly miss her laughter jokes and her being.

Rest well and in total peace, my friend, my heart is heavy.”

Warwick also had this to say.

>> When Dolly told me, “You do you and I’ll do me and together we’ll be us.

” And now I just say that to everybody cuz I’m like, “Yeah, you do you and I’ll do me and we can be us and that’ll be so cute, but like I can’t be giving like you and you can’t be giving me like we all just need to be ourselves.”

It was such a like she was um like trying to slay me.

But um yeah, she was trying it um officially, but it actually like made me just all of us in our room like you should just be you and like I can just be me and then we can just coexist.

And I think that when you start trying to be, you know, I don’t love the word idol because it feels like something you’re worshiping and like I don’t want or need to be worshiped.

I just want to be like loved like everybody else.

So love >> unusual through the years.

He’s very intuitive, too.

I think he’s kind of clairvoyant at times.

So, uh, whatever works has worked for 54 years.

56 together and we have a good relationship.

He’s got a great sense of humor and so we’ve we’ve made it, uh, really well and that’s his it’s my Well, actually, we got married again when we were married 50 years.

So now he tells people that I’m his second wife.

I said, ‘ Don’t say that.

You know, I’m still the only one.

>> What about producing Dolly Parton?

>> Yeah, what a joy.

>> What is that like?

>> God, what a joy that was.

This is an embarrᴀssing story to tell, but anyways, cᴀssette players are pretty new and I had I had these songs on cᴀssette.

Okay.

Well, the only cᴀssette player she had was in her bedroom.

And I’m just getting with her for the very first time, right, to listen to these songs.

And I had the cᴀssette.

She said, “Oh, well, my cᴀssette player is in the bedroom.”

And it was one of those big boxes was sitting on a dresser, right?

So, she jumps up on the bed and she pats the side of the bed.

She says, “Sit here next to me on the bed and we’ll listen to these cᴀssettes.

” Right?

>> So, I’m up there and and she’s so funny.

You know how she is.

Mind is so quick, you know, and I, you know, my heart’s like, you know, here we are.

You know, I can’t, you know, I’m embarrᴀssed.

I’m sitting on Dolly’s bed.

We’re going to listen to these songs.

And she look makes some comment to me about imagine how many guys would like to be in the bed with me, right?

And I’m and I’m like, I’m turning red as a be.

I’m probably turning red now even telling this story.

You know, when Dolly showed up the first day, she had learned the entire script, everybody’s lines, everything.

She didn’t know that she would didn’t have to learn everything.

I remember the morning that she came in and she called me and Lily over and you know she has these century long nails and she started going like this and she said well I’ve written a song for the movie you want to hear it and then using her nails as percussion she sang 9 to5 working 9 to5 and Lily and I looked at
Each other we both had goosebumps and we both knew this is going to be a legend this is going to be a hit and we all knew each other but not very well you know it was sort of pᴀssing at parties and things like that and we really got along and we liked each other a lot and we had a good time And then the movie did so well, why not do it again in Italy.

She is an amazing woman.

[music] She is an amaz She is so smart and she’s kind of psychic.

She’s really profound.

I I am in awe of Dolly.

I love her very much.

And I said, first thing I said to her when I met her, I was like, I don’t know how you do what you do and you’re she said, well, I dreamed myself in a into a corner and now I’ve got to live up to it.

>> I got to be responsible.

But actually, >> she won’t stop.

But with the music though, Linda Perry.

>> OH MY GOSH.

>> OH MY GOD.

>> I first went on the road with Dolly as a kid, getting a taste of the road life in the early 1980s.

Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible.

Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians, and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent.

By her example, we believed that anything was possible.

She never saw a door she couldn’t open.
