Christa Pike, the death row inmate who survived an execution last Wednesday, is conscious, speaking and receiving medical care, it was revealed on Tuesday.

Her lawyers said she remains in handcuffs and shackles despite suffering sustaining substantial injuries to her arms after two lethal doses of pentobarbital failed to end her life.

According to the statement, her prognosis is unclear.

“At a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” attorneys Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason said. “We are incredibly grateful to the first responders and the medical team at the hospital who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her. We also want to thank thousands from all over the world who sent messages offering prayers and support for Christa.”

The lawyers described Pike’s recovery as “medically unprecedented” and said that she will face a long recovery.

The failed execution was the second in Tennessee in four months and attracted international attention. Lee has ordered an independent investigation into the botched capital punishment and called off the one remaining execution in the state this year.

He also confirmed the resignation of Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada, who oversaw the botched executions of Pike and Tony Carruthers in May.

The lawyers will share additional information at a news conference Wednesday.
