BREAKING UPDATE: CHRISTA PIKE ALIVE AND RECEIVING LIFESAVING CARE IN HOSPITAL, ATTORNEYS SAY
Christa Pike remains alive after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection.
Pike, 50, is in critical condition and receiving what her attorneys describe as “lifesaving medical care” at the hospital where she was taken Wednesday night. Her legal team says it still does not know her full prognosis.
The extraordinary development came after Tennessee administered two doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution.
Neither dose resulted in Pike’s death.
Witnesses reported that she continued breathing for more than an hour, at times making sounds resembling snoring. Her attorney demanded that the execution be stopped and that emergency medical treatment be provided. An ambulance later transported Pike from the prison to a hospital.
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. She would have been the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years.
Gov. Bill Lee has since halted Tennessee executions for the remainder of 2026 and ordered a comprehensive third-party review into what happened.
My take: This case has now moved far beyond the expected execution timeline. Pike remains critically ill, her long-term condition is uncertain, and Tennessee faces major questions over how an execution intended to carry out a death sentence instead ended with emergency hospitalization.
