Christa Pike is awake and talking, her lawyers say in a new statement.
“Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking and continues to receive critical medical care,” her lawyers said in a statement on Oct. 6. “Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”
The attorneys added in the statement that Pike is still shackled to her hospital bed “despite the severe damage she endured to her arms.”
“We are incredibly grateful to the first responders and the medical team at the hospital who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her,” the lawyers said.

Pike was taken to the hospital on Sept. 30 after Tennessee was unable to complete her execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution in Nashville on Wednesday, Sept. 30, despite administering two rounds of pentobarbital.
Pike is “the only person known to have survived a complete execution attempt in the U.S.,” her lawyers said in the statement.
Her lawyers said on Oct. 2 that she was still unconscious and intubated on a ventilator at the hospital.

The Tennessee Department of Correction maintains that its execution team followed the state’s protocol.
“The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening,” the department said following the failed attempt.
Gov. Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third-party review and postponed Tennessee’s one remaining execution scheduled for 2026.
Pike was sentenced to death for the January 1995 murder of fellow Knoxville Job Corps student Colleen Slemmer.
Pike was 18 and Slemmer was 19 when Pike, Tadaryl Shipp and Shadolla Peterson lured Slemmer to a wooded area, where Pike and Shipp attacked and killed her while Peterson acted as a lookout, according to the AP and court documents.

Pike beat Slemmer with a large piece of asphalt and kept a fragment of her skull as a souvenir. Shipp later acknowledged that he carved a pentagram into Slemmer’s chest, according to the AP and court documents.
Pike was the only defendant sentenced to death. Shipp, who was 17 when Slemmer was killed, received life in prison with the possibility of parole. Peterson received six years of probation after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact.
