DOLLY PARTON WROTE “HELLO GOD” AFTER 9/11 — THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG SHE SAID “CAME LOOKING FOR HER”

Posted by Team - September 15, 2026
Dolly Parton wrote “Hello God” on September 12, 2001. She said later that the song came looking for her.
It was calling out, she said. “Write me.” She had been filming near Pigeon Forge, out where the phones did not work, when the towers came down. Someone ran from a farmhouse shouting the news.
The following summer she put the song on Halos & Horns. That November she sang it at the CMA Awards with a Nashville church choir behind her.
What she said about it afterward was plain. We are not strong. We need You. We have got to have some help.
On her 2016 tour, she closed every night with it
If you stay with the songs she wrote when the country was still counting its ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, follow our page. We keep those quieter rooms open.
