SHE WASN’T THE WOMAN THEY WERE LOOKING FOR — ONE BULLET LEFT LATASHA TAYLOR PARALYZED FROM THE NECK DOWN

One breakup was supposed to end a relationship. Instead, according to police, it ended with an innocent woman permanently losing the life she knew.
On February 15, 2025, Latasha Taylor, a 42-year-old wife and mother, was riding in a car with her cousin through Jacksonville, Florida.
She had nothing to do with the breakup that had happened days earlier.
She wasn’t the ex-girlfriend.
She wasn’t the person being pursued.
She was simply sitting in the pᴀssenger seat.
But police say the woman her cousin had recently broken up with was following them.
Her name was Latorray Collins.
According to investigators, Collins tracked her former boyfriend’s vehicle through Jacksonville’s Murray Hill neighborhood. Eventually, both cars stopped at a red light near Post Street and McDuff Avenue.
And that’s when an argument began.
Latasha reportedly asked her cousin who the woman following them was. Collins approached the vehicle, and the confrontation became increasingly heated.
Then a gun came out.
A single moment changed everything.
Latasha was sH๏τ in the head/neck area.
She survived the shooting, but the injuries were devastating. Her family later said she was left paralyzed from the neck down, requiring extensive care and facing a completely different future.
And there was another heartbreaking detail.
Latasha wasn’t even the woman Collins was reportedly looking for.
Her family described the shooting as a case of mistaken idenтιтy. Collins allegedly believed she was confronting another woman connected to her former boyfriend.
Latasha’s husband, Tony Taylor, said the family had been preparing to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.
Instead, they spent their days at the hospital praying that she would survive.
She did.
But surviving was only the beginning.
Latasha would have to face life with a permanent spinal injury because of a confrontation that, according to investigators, had nothing to do with her.
Collins was arrested and initially charged with attempted second-degree murder.
More than a year later, the case reached its conclusion.
In June 2026, Collins pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter with a firearm and was sentenced to 12 years in Florida state prison, receiving credit for time already served.
For the prosecution, the case was over.
For Latasha, it never will be.
A sentence can measure prison time.
It cannot measure the years of mobility that were taken away.
It cannot give her family back the future they imagined.
And it cannot undo the moment when an ordinary ride in a car became the moment that changed Latasha Taylor’s life forever.
She survived the bullet. But she also survived the life-changing consequences that came after it.
