BREAKING: CHRISTA PIKE REPORTEDLY AWAKE AND SPEAKING AFTER FAILED EXECUTION ATTEMPT, LAWYERS SAY
Christa Pike is awake and speaking one week after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection.
Her attorneys confirmed the major development Tuesday, saying Pike has regained consciousness and continues to receive critical medical care at a hospital.
Pike, 50, survived two doses of pentobarbital during the September 30 execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution. She was rushed to the hospital after Tennessee was unable to complete the execution.
Her lawyers say Pike suffered significant injuries to her arms, which were described in court filings as swollen, burned and blistered.
Her prognosis remains unclear, and her legal team expects a lengthy recovery. A medical expert consulting with her attorneys said Pike is now off the ventilator and able to speak, but cautioned that she still faces serious medical risks.
The legal battle is also entering a new phase.
Pike’s attorneys are seeking preservation of evidence from the execution attempt, including needles, drug information and execution logs, as they try to determine exactly what went wrong. Tennessee officials say the evidence is already required to be preserved.
Gov. Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third-party review of the failed execution and suspended further Tennessee executions while the incident is investigated.
Pike remains under a death sentence for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
My take: Pike being awake and speaking is a major change from the critical condition reported immediately after the execution attempt, but it does not resolve the case. Her recovery, the investigation into what went wrong and whether Tennessee could ever attempt another execution now create legal and medical questions without a clear precedent.
